CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet: Harnessing AI for Long-Term Health Goals
Published on January 9, 2025
As we welcome 2025, the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet continues to innovate, introducing new features designed to help members achieve their health and weight loss goals with greater ease and flexibility. One of the most exciting additions is the My Journey AI-powered tool, which leverages cutting-edge research to deliver personalised, effective, and sustainable results.
Introducing My Journey: AI at the Forefront of Personalised Health
My Journey is a groundbreaking feature of the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet, developed to provide tailored weight loss goals based on an individual’s unique circumstances, such as age, starting weight, and health status. CSIRO scientist Dr Gilly Hendrie, who leads this research, explains:
“Our data shows that personalised goals not only support early weight loss but also lead to better long-term outcomes. Breaking it up into bite-sized pieces and celebrating each win along the way really makes longer-term success more achievable.”
Dr Hendrie highlights that while ambitious goals, such as losing 20 kilograms, can often feel unattainable, personalised goals tailored to the individual are much more effective. In fact, nine out of ten members who followed personalised goals lost 5% or more of their body weight within a year, compared to only 3% who set their own targets.
A Success Story: Georgina Willard’s 40kg Transformation
Georgina Willard, an international flight attendant, turned to the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet after losing her job during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 16 months, Georgina lost 40 kilograms, crediting My Journey for helping her stay focused and motivated.
“I started setting smaller, more manageable targets... For me, it was about getting to the next five kilos,” she shared. “The best thing about the program is it’s not about depriving yourself—it’s about moderation.”
Georgina not only transformed her physical health but also experienced significant improvements in her asthma and eczema. Her story illustrates how the program’s holistic approach fosters sustainable, healthy lifestyle changes.
Key Findings From Our Research
The success of My Journey reflects the power of personalised goal-setting within the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet. Recent research from CSIRO uncovered that:
- Members who followed personalised stretch goals lost significantly more weight than those with standard goals, averaging 12kg in the first 12 weeks.
- 47% of members who achieved their personalised weight loss goals saw sustained success over 12 months.
Dr Hendrie emphasises:
“This is about healthy eating and learning the skills and knowledge to maintain that in your lifestyle going forward. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach.”
A Program Designed for Long-Term Health
Unlike restrictive diets or short-term weight loss solutions, the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet encourages balanced nutrition, including all food groups—even indulgences. Dr Hendrie explains:
“It’s high protein, low GI carbohydrates, and nothing is off-limits. Over the longer term, this is more sustainable because it focuses on creating lasting lifestyle changes.”
The personalised system fosters real behaviour change, empowering members to create healthier habits that benefit not just themselves but their families as well.
